There are many safe and effective means of sedation available today that can help relax children who are very young or who have a high level of anxiety and promote a good environment for optimal and safe dental treatment.
Your DFC pediatric dentists are fully trained and licensed to administer sedation, and can keep your child relaxed and comfortable during treatment. Our doctors are on staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital, and thus able to provide dental care under a hospital setting should the need arise.
There are several different levels of sedation that can be administered, depending on your child’s needs, and the amount of treatment required.
NItrous Oxide (laughing gas) – Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is very common and the most frequently used method for easing mild to moderate anxiety in children. Administered through a small mask that fits over your child’s nose, your child will be asked to breathe through his or her nose. He or she will still be fully conscious with all reflexes, and able to talk with the dentist while feeling relaxed. At the end of your child’s appointment, he or she will resume breathing regular oxygen, and all the effects of nitrous oxide will disappear as the appointment comes to an end. They are able to go back to school and/or resume their daily activities.
Oral Conscious Sedation – It is sometimes recommended for certain anxious children if they are very young or have a very short procedure to do. The oral sedation will calm your child and work to reduce the anxiety or discomfort associated with dental treatments.
General anesthesia (sleep dentistry) – Our DFC dentists maintain active staff privileges at Markham Stouffville Hospital and thus we are able to provide safe dental care under general anesthesia which can be performed either in the hospital or outpatient setting at the Markham office with board licensed anesthesiologists. Generally all the treatment necessary can be completed in this one appointment.
If you have any more questions, or wish to schedule an appointment or consultation, please feel free to call the office, and we would be happy to discuss any concerns you may have.
